The Savage Westphall Universe
All games exist solely in the minds of the player and the Game Master; much like a group delusion. We convince ourselves that these characters and adventures exist for our entertainment and enjoyment. We’re like actors on the stage entertaining each other for our own amusement. At the end of St. Elesewhere an autistic child named Tommy Westhall is seen with the globe of the hospital where the series had taken place. The camera had finished zooming out of the globe and it is implied that the entire series just took place in the child’s mind. While this immediately stinks of lazy writing it led to quite a bit of hubbub surrounding all of the shows that may be in the “Tommy Westphall Universe” and how many people might really be dreams of this child. For a list of shows one should look to A Multiverse Explored which outlines all the shows that would be connected to this idea of the multi-verse. One has to wonder though, how does this multi-verse different from a game of Savage Worlds?
Through the Looking Glass
Truthfully it doesn’t vary much. All of the stories and characters we watch on TV are all fictional as are the characters we play. We make up the characters and act out the lines, the drama comes from our play and is only in our minds. Our characters live and die much like those on TV. They can be heroes, villains, or the stars of their own comedy shows. As we are the gods of their existence their plights and perils are only of our own making. Personally all of my characters have a tendency to make cameos in other games. Showing up as NPCs to help out the players only to disappear into the night. All of my games already exist in their own multi-verse what’s saying that on a deeper level all of our games aren’t connected?
Six Degrees of Separation
Every person in the world is separated by no more then six steps. When you get into small communities like Savage Worlds the number is likely to become even smaller. Which means that if all of us, like myself, play games that are interconnected, all of our worlds are too. Each joyful occasion is celebrated amongst the many as we’ve all partaken in it. Each character loss and sadness is felt by all. We are our own microcosm of geekdom; each die roll brings us even closer together. All of us in the same little universe.
