There are GM’s and then there are GM’s that take Game Mastering to the level of Legendary. While these few, proud folks live a life of prestige and valor amongst those who get to play under them it’s worth noting what kind of person this savvy broadcaster GM is.

Has Been Both a GM and a Player

One of the biggest things these Legendary GM’s tend to have is years of playing on both ends of the table. They can think like a player and react like a GM in the blink of an eye. Like a seasoned pitcher they are ready to throw anything at the players all in the name of a good time. Like the Babe before them they can call the shots and command the reverence of those who play with them. They own this game like they were born to run it.

Full of Humor and Catch Phrases

This Legendary GM knows just the right amount of humor and drama. Knowing when it’s best to drop a witty one liner and when it’s best to bring just a little tear to your eye. They subtly direct the story and make sure that all the emotional pitches are “Juuuust a bit outside” of the normal realm their players are dealing with. Making them reach deep into their skills as a roleplayer and ultimately become a better player.

Legendary Just for Being Themselves

To become a GM of this caliber though you ultimately just need to be yourself, relax and have fun with it. Share your joy with others, it’s infectious, and try to teach as often as you can. It’ll ultimately make you a better GM and well on your way to being legendary. Also remember if you get too far behind there is always the chance of a “couple of grand slammers [and you'll] be right back in” the game. Just don’t give up, and never accept failure.
